| - The atmosphere in this medium-sized diner is very cool. They play a variety of cool music from indie-rock to old swing/jazz. In the summer, the front window is wide open, allowing for a pleasant breeze. Be warned: they have a bee feeder! Yes, there are a few bees flying around in the dining area, but they are not much of a nuisance.
Our server was very nice and helped us with the menu. The items on the menu are not necessarily anything you've had before. I learned that a Caesar is like a bloody Mary prepared with Clamato instead of simple tomato juice (and that they are delicious; we ordered the classic and the 'kick in the teeth' varieties). I also learned that they do not brew drip coffee, but only make espresso. However, they will make an Americano for you non-espresso fans.
We also ordered the 'Breakfast Benny,' which was delightful, and the 'Hitchiker,' including the Waffle Bacon upgrade. The Breakfast Benny I would rate 5/5, and the Hitchiker 3.5-4/5. However, the Waffle Bacon belongs in its own category. It is a simply divine invention, described by our server as "bacon in a waffle hug." Waffle Bacon gets 6.5/5. Order some. You will not be disappointed. Also, their regular bacon that comes as a side (which is not hugged by waffles) is more than just a strip of bacon, it is caramelized. It's similar to maple bacon: sticky, sweet, and all the more delectable for it.
We were unable to finish our entire meal, but only ended up taking home some of the waffle bacon. I would come back for sure on a lazy morning or afternoon. The food is a bit pricey for what it is, but is all manner of tasty nonetheless. The service was cheerful, and despite there being a new guy in the kitchen, our food arrived in perfectly reasonable time. Bonus: this little gem is located only a block or two north of the Landsowne subway stop.
