| - Terrible customer service. Avoid this place like the plague. I was a BJ's club member 3 years ago when I was single and living in Virginia, but had let my membership lapse because it did not suit my needs as a single bachelor and I found the quality of the products to be lacking. Additionally, I hated clipping their coupons.
Fast forward to today 12/12/2015 (now married), my wife wanted to visit a BJ's because she's never been a member nor ever stepped foot inside a BJ's store and she wanted to see what it was like (she loves clipping coupons). We've been receiving ads in the mail for the 60-day trial membership and I thought "Why not give them another try? Maybe I was wrong about them?" This was only the beginning of the nightmare.
When my wife and I arrived at this store, we waited at least 10 minutes at the membership services desk because there was a line of 5 people with the 60-day trial membership offers in their hands (the lady directly behind us was a previous member while chatting with her). There was only 1 employee at the counter (employee named "Mike") who had to call for backup which did not arrive until 5 minutes later. I spoke with one of the backup employees and explained that I was previously a BJ's member but my wife wanted to sign up for the the 60-day trial as she's never been to a BJ's before. The employee immediately went into a speech about how the free trial is only good for ONE person per lifetime and only ONE per household and she then tried to sign me up for membership which I declined. She then passed us over to Mike to check my name in the membership database with my driver's license and Mike updated my old Virginia address in the system with the new address on my license. I told him that my wife wanted to sign-up for the 60-day trial because she was never a member and Mike proceeded to ask us whether we live/lived together. My wife said "no" because we did not live together as a "household" when I was a BJ's member three years ago and single. Mike then took my wife's driver's license and compared it to the computer screen with my updated address information and said that because our addresses matched, he would not sign my wife up for the trial and would only give us a 1-day pass with a 15% surcharge on items purchased. At this point, I was pissed for being treated like a criminal and I asked for a corporate contact to make a formal complaint. The "manager" present overheard us and told Mike to go ahead and sign my wife up for the trial. Then the machine printing the membership card broke down and we had to wait while they re-printed a new card for my wife. Meanwhile, the other people who came with the 60-day trial membership offers (including the previous BJ's members) all had their free trial activated before us while my wife and I were publicly embarrassed and waited about 25-30 minutes total before actually browsing the store.
My wife did buy a few items (chocolates, string cheese, and a 5-lb box of clementines) and when we got home we noticed that about 6-7 of the clementines at the bottom of the sealed box and were rotten, moldy, and squishy/leaking.
This place is understaffed, has poor customer service (treating us like criminals for the trial membership), and has poor quality products...confirming to me once again why BJ's Warehouse and this particular BJ's store is absolutely terrible. We will not be going back, even with 59-days left on the trial membership. I would give this place negative stars if I could.
Here's my advice: go to Costco in Mayfield Heights (of which my wife and I are actually paying members) and get a much better experience, customer service, and selection of quality products.
