| - First time ordering food here, despite having SN bookmarked for years. Ordered takeout, since delivery charges proved to be too much*, even for someone who is trying to speedily recuperate from a nasty cold (that's me), especially now that I know how short a drive it is for a pickup... I can use the $10+ savings for another bowl of pho, or entree!
Estimated time for pickup (20-25 minutes) was accurate, or at least it was for this trip. I ordered the Crispy Calamari ($8; buttermilk batter, pickled cucumbers and carrots on the side, and side of sweet chili sauce), Special Pho ($9; thin-sliced steak, well-done flank, tripe, and meatballs, with egg noodles, instead of rice noodles, +$1), and Shaken Beef ($10; stir-fried with green beans, onions, and bell peppers and came with a side of white rice, and I added extra side of egg noodles, +$1). I enjoyed everything! Their pho broth is slightly sweet, but this can be off-set by adding slices of jalapeƱos. The thin slices of raw steak were packed with the egg noodles, bean sprouts, cilantro, jalapeƱos, and mint.** I divided these steak slices into two bowls, poured the broth and other meats on top, and then we added the garnishes. I didn't care for the well-done flank, and Mom told me not to add any lime, because she didn't like how her soup tasted with it; Mom wanted the Special, for the meatballs and tripe, so we went with that, instead of my ordering the Steak pho. In the end, she didn't care for the pho... She's still stuck on her Bun Bo Hue (at Mekong Plaza)! She also didn't care for the Crispy Calamari, but I found them to be tasty, even without dipping in the sweet chili sauce. I liked the crispiness of the battered coating, despite the app being ensconced in its styrofoam box from the time of pickup, my quick detour to the post office, and finally home, where the goods were released from their non-biodegradeable cages as soon as they hit the table. If these calamari rings were French fries, they would've been too soggy to eat in that short span of time, but they weren't. Lastly, the Shaken Beef was as delicious as I imagined they would be! Well, almost-- I didn't expect it to have a sweet component (prob from the onions and bell peppers), but the peppery meatiness, as well as the crisped stir-fried green beans- I try not to eat inflammatory bell peppers and leave them where they lie- made it a pleasurable meal. I really enjoyed eating this dish with the extra egg noodles.
We probably won't order the calamari again, but I wouldn't mind trying other items on the menu! I also noticed that SN offers milk teas (with boba, if you want), as well as Thai iced tea, but I will have to wait until I beat this nasty cold virus before taxing my system with unnecessary added sugars! Oh, and btw, Visa and Mastercard only, with a $7.50 minimum purchase.
* $6 delivery charge, plus a 15% service fee. The delivery is handled by a third party, Eat24, which takes your online order and relays it to the business in question, in this case SN.
** Be sure to place your takeout bags on the floor of the car, in a space where they can't move around too much, to prevent spillage! I had them on the floor, but with a lot of room to move. Thankfully, the kitchen packed the soup and Shaken Beef styro containers in their own plastic bags, which still allowed them to spill over their containers, but not all over my car floor- whew!
