  • I was surprised to see that HCafe has replaced the very popular Uncle Tetsu's! The owner is the same, but there is a whole new menu with a new variety of Japanese desserts! The original Japanese cheesecake was made very well, with just the right amount of softness while maintaining a rich cheese flavor. I actually prefer this one over Uncle Tetsu's because it is a lot more firmer and less mushy compared to the latter. Even though it is technically the same cheesecake, there may have been an alteration of the recipe or maybe it was just a better day in the kitchen. The strawberry mochi cake was what got me the most excited. Upon tasting it, I was a little disappointed as the cake tasted strongly of an artificial strawberry flavor or syrup (similar to the ones found in bubble teas). The texture was very interesting as it was a chewy mochi layer on top of a creamy mousse layer and a cookie bottom. I actually really like the cookie layer as it complemented the softer top layers well. The concept was great but the flavor can definitely be improved. It might have been because I did not taste the cake fresh, but the flavor was not as impressive as I thought. The fruit mochi's were quite expensive, which each mochi costing almost $5. The strawberry tasted very different, as it had a red bean filling. The combination was a little strange and hard to describe, it didn't taste terrible, but it also didn't taste great. The kiwi mochi was way too sour. The fruits may not have been ripe enough when made, making it too sour for a sweet. The banana one was probably one of the better ones with a good mixture of sweetness and tanginess. The good thing about all the mochi's are that they are not overly sweet and are very light and chewy. However, I definitely do not think that they are worth the $5 as it truly did not taste amazing. Prices seemed to have gone up, but the cheesecake still remains delicious! Out of the many desserts in the menu, I would still recommend the original cheesecake over everything else!
