| - This place used to be FUN. It seems like they haven't put much effort into updating or reinventing itself and thus it has resulted in less crowds, lots of space and a feeling of too much openness.
I think the problem is three-fold:
a) they painted it white, making the lights too harsh (although see (a) in my list below) instead of renovating - not that i think it should be ultra modern by any means but to me it was a white wash
b) drinks are too expensive for the crowd - it's supposed to be laid back, and you are charging me 6.50 before tip for a Canadian?? (cheap domestic beer)
c) Charging 10$ at the door
When you factor these things in, besides stagettes and other such fares, there isn't enough of a regular draw for a regular party crowd. It's a compounding problem; a person goes there and sees how empty it feels, and remembers that the next time he/she wants to go out, AND spreads the word of the diminished vibe. A downward spiral. If say, the drinks were reasonable or cheap, at least it would be something, something positive from the experience.
Things that they have improved:
a) they have finally installed dimmers on the lighting system)
b) they stopped playing bon jovi and journey. Generally speaking, improved the music, DJ was awesome last Saturday.
It isn't a place i would go back to again, even though i have dozens of fond memories of the place.
It's interesting that often times clients have a better sense of the trajectory of a company than the people in the midst of operating it (ie RIM) lol. I went there 3 years ago and predicted it.
