After reading all the rave reviews about NZ Cafe, knowing I'm still on the search for my go-to sushi place in and around Charlotte, I had to give them a try.
Per the suggestions of others my bf and I went for a late lunch during the week to try to avoid a crowd. We got there around 1:45pm and there were a couple tables open - no one is kidding when they say this place is tiny. But, that wasn't necessarily a shot against it - our waiter could see us from essentially anywhere in the restaurant so when we were ready to order it was super easy to flag him down. Speaking of which, the service in general was pretty good. My water was always filled and they checked up on us a couple times to make sure the food was satisfactory.
We ended up going with a few rolls and several pieces of nigiri. The fish itself tasted very fresh, I would almost just get nigiri next time, and I enjoyed the rolls but I have definitely had better. The prices are pretty much unbeatable and the list of options is fairly extensive. It seemed like many of the rolls had a lot of the same ingredients though so if you're looking for variety (and sans cream cheese) you might be looking for a little while.
All in all, if I was in the area already I would definitely stop in for a late lunch again. But it's a little too out of the way (35min drive) and didn't knock my socks off enough for me to justify going regularly.
