  • Danger, thine name is Loblaws. As a Cabbagetowner, a proud one at that, I can say that there were still some things that could make our hood better, namely, a decent supermarket. I love our little shops and frequently visit them for my delicatessen, bread and natural food needs. However, places to buy quality produce at not-organic prices were just, well, N/A. No Frills, while convenient, is mostly shoddy and always crowded and never seems to have the sundry products I'm looking for. Fresh Co, sorry Sobeys, but I'm a President's Choice kind of girl (their vanilla almond milk has literally changed my life!) and Food Basics, I'm not going to even bother.... So the Canadian Shrine to Hockey's most highly valued yet under performing team was converted into a retail mecca of food and almost everything else in life. Upon opening, much to do was made of the wall of cheese, chocolate sold by the chunk and the maple leaf structure composed of original "blues" by the entrance. It was, to say the least, a daunting experience the first time I went shopping there. So much to take in! The layout is pretty intuitive though and labeled well. There is a bit of a learning curve and if you miss something it's a longer than usual walk back to whatever section you have to go back to, but eventually you get it down. This is a place of serious abundance, case in point they have a 30" refrigerator case of yogurt, JUST yogurt, every kind of yogurt you could possibly imagine. And if they don't have something you're looking for, request it and management will do it's best to bring it in for you. They advertise this service as you walk in the front door with a sign of what was requested and delivered. Prices on pharmacy type goods are on par with Shoppers Drugmart, including a huga wall of natural supplements. They have a vast array of kitchen accessories and small appliances. The Tea Emporium satisfies any tea connoisseur, certainly satisfies me (check out the candied almond dessert tea, delish). And while you're there, be sure to try one of the many product samples being offered throughout the store. The place works like a well oiled machine, staff are friendly and helpful (hard to come by in your average grocery store) and they take Visa which strangely No Frills does not. So if you haven't already, check out the reincarnation of the Gardens. You'll come for the history and keep coming back for the shopping... just be sure to bring more reusable bags than you think you'll need as it's close to impossible to only buy what's on your list.
