| - This place has been here for 19 years. It's right by the Venetian lake where you can be serenaded by the gondoliers and tourists floating by you on gondolas. The renovated decor here is quite nice, and colorful, as though it were a street corner in Mexico. (A nice touch is the bright robin's egg blue Citroen truck parked on one side of the restaurant where tacos are sold--smart!)
The crab cakes ARE quite good (as others have said), but "muy picante" (very spicy). It would have been nice for the server to let us know that. Thankfully, I enjoy spicy, and it was delicious. But my husband did not fare as well, and could only take a bite. He also ordered a steak dish with beans that had really spicy onion and jalapeƱos on it that made his eyes immediately water and his hands reach out for water (which was almost gone). Needless to say, he did not enjoy his meal. And at $36, it was a waste. Again, this is something the server should have given a heads-up about! I took some of his onions/jalapeƱos and placed them in my pozole soup, and MAN ALIVE, it was HOT! I had to immediately take them out, but the contact with the soup, made it irredeemably spicy thereafter, even for me. (Though I did nearly finish it, anyway). I think the server should have given a heads up, as I said. I even ASKED about the spiciness level, and he said not to worry. The menu should probably give a better heads-up, too. Not everyone is a spicy food person; some of us are gringos, remember! This is a tourist place, after all. And it took a long time to get re-fills on drinks, and our server kept forgetting our corn tortillas, etc. I was trying to get him to get me the enchiladas to try, but he didn't catch on. Maybe he was given too many tables? It's a busy location.
Aside from the crab cakes, the Queso fundido is a safe bet, too. (Cheesy, rich, and not spicy). The pork pozole had a nice, mild flavor. I would avoid the chocolate dessert. (Though I am a chocolate fanatic!) It was way too dense. But the tres leches cake was better.
Overall, the food was tasty (though I suspect loaded with salt and/or MSG, or artificial sugar or something--we were really quite bloated that night--first time in a long while, despite eating out a LOT), but the service was lacking.
Aside from not providing good information about the spice level of the food (despite asking), and not getting drinks filled, the server failed to give us the 10% discount that the manager suggested that we get for being locals. Even though we asked, and he said he would, he didn't do it. I didn't notice until I reviewed the bill walking away from the restaurant. And we called about it, and were told that they would take it off the bill and get back to us...but no one got back to us. Bummer.
