  • This review is for the lunch special only. I may seem a curmudgeon for my two star review but I'm actually a pretty nice guy. Some sushi background may be in order.I'd eaten a lot of sushi and enjoyed it almost everywhere, but that changed pretty dramatically the first time I had the assorted sushi plate at "japanese i." When I tasted my first bite I almost said ewww. That piece of sushi had such a dramatic flavor, in fact every piece of that nigiri-zushi plate was as singular in taste as wines made from different varietals, actually even more so. "Japanese i," had become the standard (fairly or not) by which all other sushi is compared. I got the lunch special with the following rolls: salmon, tuna and yellowtail with avocado. The rolls were competently made; they didn't fall apart when I ate them. They all fell within the "they mostly tasted alike" category which is the largest sushi category in the Charlotte area. The servings were generous; I would have been full on two rolls. The accompanying soy sauce was the saltiest I'd ever tasted - very little subtlety there. All in all, a poor experience and even though I'm curious about the beautiful and expensive fusion rolls, I'm reluctant to go given my lunch experience. After all, it's all about the quality of the fish, and the fish here was mediocre. "Japanese i" is now closed, a casualty of the recession.
