| - Cowtown not only has the greatest selection of vintage instruments in Las Vegas, but their staff is incredibly knowledgeable of guitars and their respective tones. That should be a no-brainer, dude is the friggin "guitar expert" on Pawn Stars for crying out loud. Jesse is the definition of "As Seen On TV," because what you see (on TV) is what you get (in real life). But I understand if you think TV is bogus (cause it mostly is), though I can assure you they didn't pick Jesse to be their expert for any other reason than dude knowing his s&*%. Allow me to elaborate.
As a recording engineer, I often use plugins when I write my own guitar parts so I can come up with diverse tones without having to have an arsenal of pedals and amps in front of me. I use this method mainly for quick ideas. Yes, I know the real thing is way better, but sometimes you can find a great tone and actually get some great takes, plus you can always re-amp it later. If you DO get great takes, why re-record them, right? A problem only arises when the time comes to perform the song live and you need to find an analogue to whatever plugin combo you are using. This may sound simple at first, but there are so many different versions of flanger/delay/reverb/etc hanging out in the guitar shop that you could struggle forever trying to find the exact one that the plugin is emulating.
Recently, I happened across a specific plugin configuration that was a "must keep". I brought the "tone" in to Cowtown and Jesse offered to give it a listen. Just by hearing a rough mix on CD, Jesse was able to recreate my tone perfectly with pedals he had in stock. The best part of this story is, the pedals he suggested were almost identical in physical design as the plugins depicted in my recording software, which indicated to me that they were indeed the same models that were being emulated in the software. I probably should have recognized some of the more common designs (those plugin companies are good at making their "rip-offs" resemble the real deal). It's embarrassing admitting that I lack extensive knowledge of guitar pedals, but fortunately I have someone in Las Vegas like Jesse at a place like Cowtown to help me sort things like that out.
