| - In Vegas visiting. This experience was not the worst I have had but mildly frustrating.
1. I make an appointment at 1:30. I arrive at 1:35 and the door is locked. I called the salon no answer. I called Grimilda's cell from a card posted on the door. She advises me she had to run pick up product and would be right back. So I wait. Not too long as she arrives after about 5 minutes. Ok. No biggie. It wasn't very hot out that day.
2. Grimilda arrives and we go in to the salon. I immediately notice there is no menu of services/list of prices posted anywhere so I ask. What is the cost of a wash and set with a deep condition? After pulling my hair down from my clip she tells me $85 with a $40 deep conditioner that 'has keratin and protein in it'. 1) keratin is protein and 2) there was no way I was paying $40 for a conditioner I had never heard of from a salon I had never been to. After I did not say yes, she mentioned she had $30, $20, and $10 conditioners. I chose a $10 conditioner and we commenced.
3. The wash was thorough. The deep condition may as well have been water with a thickening agent in it. I would have expected a little more for $10, not amazing, but not useless either. I have had $5 deep conditions at Dominican salons that were better. Then came the set.
4. My hair was tangled after that shampoo with what I am sure, based on all the suds, was not a sulfate free shampoo (I actually forgot to check seeing as I have the japanese straightening treatment). Thankfully she did not attempt to rip through it with the rattail. She actually whipped out this useful (although full of previous clients' hair) brush that she mentioned cost $100. After googling the brush, ULTA and Amazon actually agreed the same brush retailed for $26. Not sure what the point of that erroneous price information was.
5. So we get detangled and set and eventually dry. I say eventually because the super old dryer was hot and not in a good way. It was too close and concentrated in the center and was literally burning my scalp so we had to turn the heat down. This extended the dry time. So we eventually dried enough for the blowout. The blowout was PAINFUL! I had to jerk my head away twice due to the heat on my scalp. It was too much and I have had this service before and am not tender headed. It was just unnecessarily and unsafely HOT. I declined a flat iron because after that blowout set on HELL my hair was straight enough and had been exposed to enough heat.
6. Now the frustrating part. The ever-changing price. So at the beginning of this process the price quoted was $85 with the $40 conditioner I declined in favor of the $10. So the price should be $85-$30 which leaves us at $55. Which IMHO is grossly inflated in the first place. Being from the east coast, and having had this service in many areas including high cost areas like NYC, I feel this should have not cost over $40 under any circumstance. The salon is nowhere close to the strip, nothing special on the inside, and she used no product beyond the low grade conditioner I paid for. Nevertheless when I rise up to pay the price is $65. Really? In defiance of simple, straightforward math the price has risen by $10.
7.So I ask her why the change in price? Excuse 1: your hair is long. Response 1: you saw the length of my hair before you gave me the price. Excuse 2: the base price ($45) was based on you getting the $40 treatment because it makes your hair smoother which requires less effort from me later in the process. Response 2: none beyond awe and confusion at the attempt to price gouge yet another $10 out of me with such a nonsensical explanation. I have never heard of such differentiation in salon pricing. 'If you don't get the $40 deep condition the base price rises by $10'? Strange!
8. Eventually she gives up after dragging me to her friend to interpret because 'I did not understand her' even though I speak fluent Spanish. She just did not know that. So after this show, she agrees to allow me to pay $55. I was planning on giving her a $5 tip anyway so I told her we could split the difference and I would pay $60. What I planned on paying all along.
Sum: My hair came out decent. Price is WAY inflated. Pricing is too unclear and owner is engaged in too much price differentiation/gouging. But I knew this was coming seeing as there were no prices posted in the salon anywhere. My recommendation: go here but work out a reasonable final price in advance. :)
