| - From 11am to 9 pm, Maize is where I go for my Mexican cravings all year. Maize is a small gem located at the intersection of Green Street and 1st Street on UIUC's campus.
Maize has limited seating with seats for up to about 15 people inside. They have two picnic benches outside that allow people to eat in warm weather. I love eating inside and out because I can see everyone go by on Green Street.
Peak hours are the usual eating hours: 12 and 5:30/6 pm. The line can get so long that it wraps around the building. When you get your receipt, it will have a number printed at the top that they call out if they are busy. The line moves pretty quickly if it is busy and it doesn't seem like a long wait at all.
The menu is simple but extensive. They have items that everyone is familiar with (tacos, burritos, quesidillas) and lesser known items (Gordita, Sope, Huarache). Basically everything at Maize involves some type of tortilla and some type of meat. They factor that differentiates them all is the way they are prepared. The staff is extremely helpful when explaining and giving recommendations. They tell you exactly how it is prepared and how big it is.
My favorite meat to order is the chorizo because not many Mexican restaurants have it and it has a bit of a kick to it! They also have pastor, chicken, and beef. There is a vegetarian option that consists of rice and beans. The chips, guacamole, and salsa are all fresh and are worth every penny. If you eat inside, you can ask for another bowl of chips and they won't mind at all. You also have to ask for silverware if you have take out. They will give you one of the packages with a napkin, fork, and a knife.
Maize has several drink options. You can request a water cup or you can enjoy some sweet Horchata or Jarritos, a Mexican soda.
Maize is as expensive or inexpensive as you would like. One taco with chips can be satisfying and will only be around $4 with tax. But with extras (drink, guac, multiple tacos), the price can add up. Personally, if I know I want guacamole one day, I will order a cheaper item. If I order a burrito, I won't order guac or a drink because the burritos are very filling.
If you don't have time or the money to go to Mexico, Maize is an excellent replacement.
