| - I'm not sure what to say about The Fear Experience. Being frightened is pretty subjective so what might make me pee my pants from sheer terror will make another person shrug in indifference. Having a hard time choosing 2 or 3 stars. I guess its a 2.5 rating.
Whatever fear that might have been induced was worn away by my impatience after waiting in line for 90 minutes (at 9pm on a Friday, so the wait wasn't a surprise). First, you wait in line to purchase a ticket (although you can buy them online and save yourself the wait). The cost for tickets is: $22 for general admission, $32 for a "fast pass" ticket which is shown as being 1/4 of the wait time, or $42/ticket which gets you to the front of the line immediately. I would have gladly paid the extra $10 or $20 to skip waiting in line. I think if you go when the Fear Experience opens (at 7pm, i think) or on a Sunday you might have better luck with the wait time. Once you have a ticket, you proceed to another room with roped off queues. And then you can enjoy heavy metal and a fog machine for the duration of your wait (and annoying groups of teenagers if you're unlucky).
They had 3 scary looking characters wandering through the lines trying to scare people (and/or to take pictures with people).
There are no bathrooms available while you're waiting in line. There was a small concession table where you can buy bags of skittles or soda, etc. while you're in line, and some concessions outside the building.
There are 4 separate themed haunted houses and you go through all of them. I think one was traditional haunted house, then a mental institution, a carnival and some kind of apocalypse sort of thing. I think the set design was really well done. They were detailed and impressive (and creepy). That being said, it was difficult to impossible to see during a some of it as it was totally dark. You're just fumbling around with your hands trying to figure out where to go. I was mostly scared about slamming my face into a wall or losing my group. That was more annoying than scary for me. It took us about 20 minutes to get through all 4 haunted houses.
The people wielding chainsaws were legitimately scary as you can feel the heat from the chainsaw (and huff gas fumes as a nice bonus). The actors (is that what I'm supposed to call them?) were well costumed/made up. I felt there were fewer actors in each successive haunted house. There wasn't any touching or grabbing by the actors. They definitely get in your personal space but nothing inappropriate. If you're going first, you're going to be surprised and frightened the most (I guess that's probably obvious). I was last in our group and was scared only about 20% of the time and I am definitely not a bad ass in any way.
I think they do a decent job for the large amount of space they're filling. It's a big place. I guess it all depends on how easily frightened you are.
I'd say it's worth it if you don't have to wait in line forever first.
