  • I remember when this place was brand spanking new and there was a light show that occurred every half hour that came out of the pharaohs eyes and I would stand there in awe and think, "now, that's entertainment!" Mind you, I can't remember the exact year this did open, so I was probably in juniour high and when you are in the age range of 12-14 everything seems awesome. The Egyptian motif of this theatre has gotten a little lazy, sure the outside of the building still has random scarabs crawling up its walls and the pillars are painted in sand colours, but the pharaoh no longer shoots green laser beams. For a movie theatre that is always impossibly busy, I don't know why they don't go back full circle of being a spectacle. They have tons of games, this is pretty much the only decent arcade in Calgary now (if you know of a better one, please let me know!!!) including a hurricane simulator, but I am not willing to spend my money to be blown at with 100 hair dryers. Adding to the delicious fanfare, they have food vendors, where you can buy Tim Hortons for probably more money than any other Tim Hortons.location, or get Pizza 'food poisoning' 73. In addition to an IMAX screen, they now have Ultra AVX, where if I understand it correctly, you reserve your seat, and the seat is better? I haven't bothered trying it yet, cause the last film I saw offered in Ultra AVX was Twilight Breaking Dawn pt. 1. Now some of the theatres are also installed with the D-box seating, where your seat MOVES. HOLY HAUNTED BLOODY MARY PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3, your seat will move. This also means you get a reserved seat. I have been too cheap to splurge for this as well. Why do I keep coming back to Scotiabank Cineplex Chinook you may ask? Because it's close, nicer than WestHills, offers more showtimes and the seats (the poor man's seats) are comfy and spacious. Oh, and the popcorn, just because I am an addict, not that their popcorn is particularly better. With the amount of traffic they move through here, least you know there is no way in hell the popcorn has been sitting long. And now that cheap movie Tuesdays are back, I can see a new film for $7.20 (if you have a scene card! $7.99 if not). IMAX and Ultra AVX performances are also discounted. My only pro tip is, don't come to any screening here 5 mins beforehand, because you will be stuck sitting in the front row. Also, if you check your cellphone during the film, the Scotiabank pharaoh will come eat your soul.
