  • Nobody wants to have a reason to review an emergency vet clinic, but if anyone in Madison needs one I sincerely hope they come here. Our super-sweet Vizsla pup is only 5 years old. Unfortunately, he's contracted a rare and nasty fungal infection called Blastomycosis (you'll want to look it up if you have a large, male, hunting/sport breed - just so you know the early signs). This sneaky infection showed up with easily mis-diagnosed symptoms, so we (and our beloved family vet) initially thought we were dealing with a simple eye infection. Once we realized something more was going on and he was losing sight, she consulted with her partner and we tested for Blasto. When the results came back positive, our vet recommended that we bring Sam here for the initial days of a very intense anti-fungal treatment. I really cannot speak highly enough of the staff at Madison Veterinary Specialists; they're amazing. We dropped Sam off on Saturday. We were able to leave shirts with our scent on them, some of 'grandma's' homemade peanut butter treats, and his regular food. We were also able - and encouraged - to visit him daily. He spent three nights there and we picked him up on Tuesday. Dr. Zoet is wonderful. He's honest and will not steer you wrong, while also being as soft and kind as you could ask for in your vet. He helped us source a much more affordable pharmacy for Sam's long-term medication, and allowed us to bring that in for their use vs. filling the 'scrip' through Walgreens. Marjan, their Veterinary Assistant, seemed ever-present and always had a big smile for us. She and ALL of the Veterinary Technicians were as sweet as could be with Sam, and us. Dr. Pauli, their ophthalmologist, is helping us treat his eyes aggressively, with the hope of retaining sight in at least one of them. We have a follow-up visit with her next week, and I trust that whatever we are advised will be the best possible course for Sam. It has been such a relief and salve to have these professionals helping us save our dog's life. I seriously appreciate that no-one has sugar coated what we're looking at, and that we're welcome to call or bring Sam in with any concerns. They have done everything possible to help us bring down costs, and they will work closely with our regular vet as we go forward. That's another kind of relief altogether. Our boy is on a hard road. We won't know the full prognosis for some time; his treatment will be long, and he could relapse. We can face all of it more easily with this loving and highly qualified team keeping an eye (and a reassuring hand) on him... and that means more than I have words for. No doubt about it; MVS is now the only place I'll consider if we ever have another pet emergency or need specialized care beyond what our family vet can provide. (Update spring 2016: Sam lost his sight but is doing awesome! We're very lucky to still have him with us and I thank MVS and our family vet for everything!)
