| - Let me start off by saying that my only reason for giving Cajun Yard Dog 4 out of 5 stars is that they do not offer beignets. And honestly I have only found one Cajun restaurant, not located in Louisiana, that offered beignets. I feel like they are a staple of Cajun cuisine. Ok, rant aside, the restaurant is small, and they do not have a hostess that greets you and takes your name if there is a wait. When you arrive and walk in there is a yellow pad of paper sitting on an entry table that you add your name to and the number in your party. It's best to arrive early if you do not want to wait to be seated. We did not know this when we arrived and there were about six parties ahead of us, however, we chose to wait as our mouths were watering for some Cajun/creole. And we were so glad we did! Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. I ordered the chicken and andouille jambalaya, my husband had the red beans and rice and my father ordered the blackened mahi. By the time we sat down and ate it was late and the waitress returned to the table to explain that they were out of mahi but could substitute tilapia. He was not at all disappointed by the substitution. In addition to our entrees we were each given the option of two sides. I had the fried okra and the green beans. The okra was delicious and I assume they must have used the same batter that they use on their fried chicken that all the yelpers talk about. Delicious. And the green beans were spot on, cooked perfectly keeping their bright green color while still having a little crunch. Mixed in with the green beans were slivered almonds, if you have a nut allergy be sure to mention it as it does not indicate that the dish contains nuts on the menu. The restaurant is decorated with Louisiana flare making you feel like you are in a café on Bourbon Street. The noise level is high, which is not unexpected given the size. There is a bar with seating for approximately 9, if you don't care to wait for a table keep an eye open for space at the bar. The restaurant also offers carry out! Happy to have found a little slice of Louisiana in Charlotte. We will surely return.
