This store is in a fairly affluent suburb that is basically heterosexual, conservative, Republican and white. So commenting on who goes here is like complaining there are too many Chinese on the streets of Beijing. The matter of interest is the debate over which ice cream is best. Some say Graeter, some say Jeni, and some say Mitchell.
Mitchell's is comparable to Graeter's. It appears Mitchell's has even copied some of Graeter's flavors and done it quite well. Usually I buy pints of Mitchell's from the grocery store. At times I pass by the Rocky River store. If it appears there are no toddlers celebrating birthdays I go inside. I only order ice cream. No sundaes, no milk shakes nor sodas as this ice cream stands on its own. I would eat the whole tub of coffee chip if I ever got behind the counter. I have been to the Graeter's in Dublin, Ohio which is quite similar demographically to Rocky River. I first had the blackberry chip there and you could not tear me away from that bowl. Overall I prefer Mitchell's to Graeter's. Considering their similarity I go with the home team.
I visited a Jeni's in Columbus at a newly opened store on North High Street. I cannot recall the flavor. I only remember thinking that I paid so much for so little. Unlike Graeter's or Mitchell's she uses corn starch, corn syrup, no eggs, and a low ratio of cream to milk. I learned this in a published recipe. I am impressed by this woman's marketing skills. I am amused by her snobbish followers who eulogize the superiority of frozen corn milk.
I will pay less at Mitchell's and get frozen cream, eggs and sugar with my flavor.
