I've always been interested in Nevada history and read about Rhyolite from some Nevada travel site. Since my husband and I were driving to Vegas, we decided to stop by since it wasn't too far off from US 95.
I wish the weather was better when we visited for better photos, but the cold and cloudy day definitely made the town seem more eerie. The train depot is at the end of the town and is fenced off, but is still standing. You can see what is left of the bank and jewelry store (the vault is there) off the road. It's quite interesting to see the buildings now and think back to the time when the town was booming with approximately 10,000 residents.
The Tom Kelly bottle house is something to check out. From what I understand it was restored by Paramount Pictures to be used for a movie.
The Goldwell Open Air Museum is minutes away from the ghost town and is home to several pieces of artwork. Probably the most well known is a ghostly version of "The Last Supper." It's creepy yet awesome.
If you are in the area, you should check this place out. The history nerd in you will thank you.
