  • This is a two faced review. Three stars...and five stars. Total bait and switch...but please read on... First, the three stars. You're new to the Valley and you're researching Monti's for a dinner out. You'll like the grub just enough. You'll like the price point. You'll love the bread. You'll like the catacombs that are the front of house...overall, you'll like it just enough to possibly consider going back again someday. The five stars. Monti's will always hold a special place in my heart. (And by special place I mean the hardened artery from the bread and red meat... http://instantrimshot.com/ I grew up in Tempe. Heck, I grew up within walking distance of downtown Tempe. The Tempe of the early 80's...which, is roughly 100 years after the building that Monti's is in was erected for the Hayden family. My family knew the Monti's...well. There have been servers who knew my name who have seen me order from the children's menu, and, eventually order alcohol. My family had special events here. I've lunched with numerous friends and family over the years here. I even dated a server there for a couple years. To me, Monti's is Tempe and a vestige of what is good about those older times. I'll always come back. It will never be the best steak I've ever had but it will always be five stars to me. Lastly, if you are in the first group, i.e., new to the Valley, and have a new family...this is a great place to start your own Valley tradition...your children will eventually thank you for it.
