| - This hotel has a beautiful exterior and lobby. When I arrived it was decorated for Christmas and it was amazing. The front desk person was friendly.
Then I went up to my room. This is one of those beautiful old buildings that needs a major renovation. From the looks of other review, apparently is was renovated at some point not too long ago, but I sure can't tell. The hall ways need a serious paint job, and when I got to my room, I was kind of disappointed.
First things first, I walked into my room during one of the coldest periods of the year, and it was FREEZING. I spent several minutes trying to locate the thermostat, only to sadly realize this hotel has those old heating/cooling units. One was not working at all. The other not so well. I decided to give it some time, and find out if it was working or maybe change rooms.
The furniture is OK. There is a small fridge and microwave with a bright light (unplug it if you want to sleep).
The bathroom is small and dark. The tile and bathtub are dingy and need redone. The floor is freezing cold, and the heat does not reach the room. Brr.
Because I had been traveling all day, I wanted to order room service. Unfortunately, neither phone worked. I walked back downstairs to tell the front desk person (not the same as when I checked in), and she just told me to use the house phone. I had to explain I needed someone to come up and fix the phone as well.
Room service is decent. The food was good, and service friendly. However there's a really limited menu. If you have any dietary restrictions, go out.
The Concierge Lounge is ok. It's nice and roomy, and has a nice view. The staff are friendly and attentive. The food is limited, and again, if any dietary restrictions, you won't find many options. Breakfast at some lounges is so nice, and includes food other than pastries. A girl can dream.
The gym is small. Very small. It's oddly set up, and there isn't much equipment.
On my second night I woke up to a freezing cold room. I had to get up and get dressed enough to have the maintenance guy bring me some sort of tiny space heater, as neither unit was working. I'm not sure how long I'm going to have to stay bundled under my blanket (no extra blankets in the room like most hotels) to wait until the room actually warms up.
I'm going to be here regularly over the next year. I'm a Marriott person, but with the major reno going on at the Marriott and this as my options, that brand new Hilton looks really inviting.
