| - I want to say that Market Village was around as far back as 1997, if not a wee bit earlier, and was a pioneer of all sorts in the fight for the perfect AZN shopping outlet that started to re-define what shopping malls should be like for the local expat community. Areas highly concentrated in Hong Kong/Chinese expat communities such as Scarborough, Markham, Richmond Hill (of cour$e) more or less now have their own Chinese businesses, so there is no need anymore to hop to Toronto Chinatown for anything (unless you are a tourist or a thug who needs to do some "bidness")
One of the primary reasons to come here is that this is one of few remaining places, if not the only game in town, where they have a movie theater that only shows fairly new/recent Hong Kong films on the big screen. And it's a pretty good deal too, for one price of admission, you get not one but TWO films back to back. Now I already said A$Ns work in cut throat pace$, and last time I was here was 2003, so I would not be surprised if bittorrent pirate$ and our mainland brethern producing bootleg$ and counterfeit$ caused this place to close down (hopefully not). It is quite a pleasure to be able to watch a good Hong Kong flick on the big screen, and I doubt there are other places in North America that can replicate that experience. Then again you may not want to, as the average A$N thug in attendance might be text msg'ing on his blackberry not far away, lighting up a ciggy, or calling his buddies up to see where they will karaoke and down some whiskey & green tea mixes later (whiskey coke is soooooooooo 80s), all this while you are trying to enjoy a film. Hopefully he is not around you when you go.
Other than that, many various restaurants ranging from family style stir fry plates, a few Northern Chinese eating places, snack shops, one bookstore/cd shop, some selling stuff you may be able to find next door at Pacific Mall (who probably crushed the businesses at Market Village when they opened up).
It is an interesting stroll for a first visit. If you have the energy to walk after going through Pacific Mall (which is literally right next door), then by all means. Otherwise the obvious lack of attendance, patronage, and the slightly less brighter interior of Market Village (as a result of everyone else flocking to Pacific Mall instead) may leave you feeling a bit depressed.
