| - We are regulars of this bakery, and order a cake each month (my mother's a singing teacher, and she gets her monthly karaoke session birthday celebration cakes from Papa John's). Though we typically get the fruit cream cake - a nice a simple cake that Papa John's does best, far better than any other bakery we've visited thus far - we decided to try something different this time and ordered the tiramisu. What a wrong decision...
The tiramisu looked NOTHING like a tiramisu. It had the ladyfingers all around the side, but immediately lacked the cocoa powder typically sprinkled on top. Instead, there was an assortment of fruit; unfortunately, the fruit was very ripe. The mango slices were therefore slightly bruised, while the strawberries were a little mushed and broken (the tips of the strawberry "roses" had fallen).
Now, for the taste... The cake was extremely difficult to cut into, and no wonder! Instead of being a cream based cake, it was literally a hardened mousse with ladyfingers embedded in... The texture was very weird and unappetizing. It wasn't a light coffee mouse; rather, it was quite dense and like a hard sponge. The taste was also off - there was little coffee taste. To be quite frank, I have no clue what it tasted like.
In summary, don't ever order the tiramisu cake! I have an order for next week for a fresh mango cream cake (the owner kept selling this, claiming it was fresh and in season), but will likely change my order after seeing the bruised and over ripe mangoes from yesterday's cake. He probably just wants to get rid of his overly ripe supplies as soon as possible.
Stick to the simple cream cakes instead. You won't regret it.
