  • Dr. Sprunger seems to prefer Gastric Bypass/RNY over the Sleeve. He was strangely OVERLY friendly during my initial consultation, but once I did my research and asked questions showing I had learned a lot, he got arrogant, gruff and defensive quickly. I was looking for comfort and assurance, not a confrontation over my concerns about potential complications. I had been doing my research the way any bariatric patient would (online and talking to acquaintances and family who had had the surgery themselves). But he chastised me for reading on my own and flat out told me NOT to! Back in the day it was newspapers, books and libraries. Today it is electronic information online (a lot of which is BASED on books). But Dr. Sprunger acted like the internet contains zero facts. But there is nothing less factual about the internet just because it is electronic. So basically it was the same as if Sprunger told patients not to read books or newspapers. Discerning adult patients know the difference between a website that is selling something and one that is legitimate. Does that mean I shouldn't believe anything on Dr. Sprunger's own website because it is on the internet? I mean he said you can't believe anything on the internet, so... I would have trusted him a lot more if he had told me to "research to my heart's content" but ask him questions afterward. In the year-long pendency of my insurance clearance phase I could rarely get ahold of his skeleton staff by phone and usually had to wait 1 to 7 days for a return call or email back from them. I got the strong sense he cares more about money than his patients because he wasn't willing to pay to keep enough staff on board or available for his patients. Although my insurance approved me and I had a surgery date, I cancelled with Sprunger. Now I read (online...) that one of his patients died in early 2018.
