| - My husband and I have been working our way through the Diners, Drives-Ins, and Dives featured restaurants, albeit slowly. Today we dropped off our girl at Pit Road Bar & Grill (another interesting DDD featured choice... an indoor go-cart place) for a birthday party and hightailed it to Cabo Fish Taco in NoDa.
I scanned the Yelp reviews on the way and noticed a trend. Get the BBQ tilapa taco, get the tuna tilapia, get the crab dip appetizer, get Michelle as your server. Since her birthday party was early in the day we stopped in around 11:45 am on a Saturday. Parking was light and we found a great street spot with no problem. Walked in to rather snippy hostess who walked us to a miniature table for two (I mention this because every single other couple was seated at a table for four).
Everything changed then because we got...Michelle...as our server. I got stitches in my hand recently and what was a crappy doctor visit became good because the the PA who stitched me up was awesome. Same thing here... if you go to CFT, you want Michelle, she's awesome. I listened to the other servers making their presentations, but they just weren't the same. She knows her stuff and has personality, to boot.
I like to tell servers when it's my first visit. Yes, I've done my homework online first. Yes, I generally know my order. But I care about their opinion. Michelle's face brightened up when I said it was our first visit and she walked us through the menu. Interestingly, it generally mimicked what I found on here from the reviewers. Get the tacos, she said, for your first time. Get the BBQ mahi mahi, get the wasabi tuna. Get the crab dip starter. Ok, then, sounds perfect.
My husband, who loves to challenge me to see if he can order the best meal when we go out orders the wasabi tuna (avarua (Tav-A-Roo) Tuna Tacos $11.50 Blackened lemon rubbed tuna in a kiwi-pineapple fajita sauce, stuffed with lettuce, tomato, mixed cheeses & topped with our honey wasabi sauce.) OMG. He wins. He so freakin wins.
For $12.95 you can mix and match two tacos. So I, following Yelp reviewers, order 1 Tilapia taco (Grilled mango BBQ mahi-mahi tacos stuffed with cabo slaw, tomato, avocado, mixed cheeses & finished with our cilantro white sauce.) and 1 Carne Asada taco (Grilled steak sauteed in a roasted red tomato sauce with peppers & onions, stuffed with lettuce, tomato & mixed cheeses.) They were both good, very good. But Todd still wins.
The tuna tacos are AMAZING. He got medium which was a smidgey pink in the middle. The tilapia, which reviewers seemed to love the most, was fine. I won't get it again. I preferred the carne asada but wasn't fond of he peppers and onions. All tacos are fork and knife. No need to pick up. They are overfilled and waaaaaay more than needed for lunch. Since I love restaurant leftovers, this was a plus for me and a plus for my wallet.
The crab dip turned out to be crab and shrimp dip with outrageous deep-fried pita corners that had just come out of the fryer. I commented on how bad they were for me and then ate about 1000 of them. It came out just minutes after ordering, piping hot, with a very, very generous serving amount, we took this home, too.
We were given a fresh salsa and chips upon being seated, a combination of roasted corn, tomatoes and scant seasoning. I'd recommend ordering an appetizer because the chips were the bagged chip variety, cold, and the salsa extremely bland. For sides, we got the refried beans (yummy) and the seasonal side which was jalapeno mashed potatoes. They had some real kick to them so be prepared. They were cold though so I wasn't really a fan.
Have you ever gone to bed thinking about your meal and your leftovers waiting in the fridge? I went up to do ironing and then eventually gave in to come back down to snack because I wanted the crab dip and Todd's wasabi tuna tacos. Obsessively so. This is a big rave. I'm going back.
