  • On Wednesday, October 29th I took my brother-in-law to Courtesy Imports to help him look at used cars for purchase. We initially worked with Carlos and eventually AJ stepped in to try to offer us a deal on a used Mazda. After test driving the car, AJ was persistent on a deal on that car as it had been sitting on the lot for some time. We went inside to look at numbers. Upon running my brother-in-law's credit, he came back with an offer that included a sales price of $12,995 (plus taxes and tags), a $500 trade in on his car, $2000 down, 2.89% financing for 60 months, and a 3-year additional 60k mile bumper to bumper warranty with $0 deductible through Mazda. After some negotiation we did not decide this was the right deal. AJ then brought Jesse into the mix. After some discussion Jesse agreed to drop the down payment to $500 and bump up the trade in to $1500 to offset and keep the payment $249/mo with less down, and keeping all else equal. We confirmed we needed to talk to family and would be in touch. The next day, I called and spoke with Phil the GM, and he confirmed he had the offer sheet and would be able to honor those terms so we made an appointment to come in and purchase the car at 3pm on Thursday, October 30th. After having to ask my questions multiple times (e.g., does the car have 2 sets of keys) and being met with dismissive responses, we got down back to the deal. AJ sat down and started to mention that the financing is in place, but would have to go through USAA. I asked what he meant and if that simply meant that is who they were dealing with to get the quoted 2.89% for 60 months. He said no, that it would be financed, but we needed to call USAA and bring a check to Mazda. In other words, Mazda was no longer going to provide financing on the car, and wanted us to drive away in the car to find our own financing. I stopped the transaction at which point AJ took me to Phil where I asked why this was no longer being honored. Phil answered that the bank wouldn't let him. I asked how the offer could have been made last night based on a credit pull, and now not being offered. He said to go through your own credit or he could offer 11%. At which point, AJ asked if we'd take the 11% to which I said absolutely not. Next, I had my brother in law call his federal loan agency to confirm if he would be able to obtain the interest rate through them while at the dealer. While my brother-in-law was on the phone, I asked for the summary sheet of cost so that we could provide the final number to the loan officer. After multiple asks I got the sheet. On it, the dealer listed $1000 for the trade in and not $1500. Upon inquiring, Phil said "whatever, it's $500 bucks, I don't care just do it." I expressed that it's not just $500 it's what was agreed upon. I then asked why the top number was off as the sales price was $12995 and he had listed an $81 sales tax credit on trade, and a top line number of $13,080. Phil then proceeded to try to belittle me and tell me that if I knew anything that there needs to be an offset for the sales tax credit, and that "if I had my calculator I brought with me the night before" I could do the math. I explained that regardless of calculator $81 does not equal $85 so something was off. He then went inside and waved me around like I was a child to see his screen. On it, he had a different sales price of $12,999. I then explained that I don't mind that there is a discrepancy of $4, I am simply trying to point out that it was not the number agreed, and it didn't add up. Phil then took it upon himself to tell me that he was already taking a loss on the car, and he "didn't even want to sell it to me." I told him I found it odd that a car sales GM would tell a customer that he doesn't want to sell a car, and that we're just trying to adhere to a deal that was agreed upon by you and your sales people. He then proceeded to tell me that if I was in business I would understand. I explained that I am in business and that I treat my customers with dignity and respect. At which point we agreed that we would not be purchasing a car from Phil or Courtesy Imports. A lot can be said for a name, and Courtesy Imports is far from courteous. In fact, they are downright dishonest and rude. They will never earn my business, and I will be sure to let everyone I know to steer clear of their bad business practices.
