  • My infant son had a rather invasive skull surgery here, that required a hospital stay following. Overall, we were pleased. Every single nurse, CNA, etc. that we encountered over the course of 5 days was excellent, caring, and compassionate. Special thanks to: Steve (OR RN), Mercedez and Chelsea (PICU RNs), Stephanie/ Shyanne/Cortney/Scott/Carrie/Kayla/Graham (PONC RNs), Jazmin/Miranda/Brittany/Nancy/Chelsea (CNAs on PONC)-- you are all FANTASTIC! Dr. Yoon on the PICU was very kind. The pediatric intensivist at night on the PICU, I cannot recall his name, thank you for advocating for me as a breastfeeding mother, I was glad to be able to feed my baby instead of having to give him pedialyte. I cannot for the life of me recall the name of the hospitalist/pediatrician we saw on PONC for our stay, but he was also so very kind and had an excellent bedside manner. I'll update if I can remember. The staff in general is just perfect. Our surgeons, Dr. Tian (neurosurgeon) and Dr. Workman (plastic surgeon), were both phenomenal. I HIGHLY recommend them. They are both very smart, strong, intelligent, highly skilled surgeons. And they are both very compassionate and kind, and have great bedside manner, really taking time to explain everything and answer questions. You could not be in better hands. Dr. Workman is especially sweet, and checked on our baby twice a day! They both seem to actually care about my son and be invested in his wellbeing and comfort. I cannot say enough good things. My only real complaints lie with the actual surgery experience, and this is the only reason this is a 4 star review... 1) I wasn't very impressed with the anesthesiologist that was assigned to us- Dr. Kathleen Strohmeyer. Her bedside manner was rather cold and stand-offish, and I would think working with children, especially when you are the one who is controlling the anesthesia, and watching the monitors, you would want parents to feel comfortable with you, and feel like you care about their child and are invested in their well being. I am sure she's good at what she does, but it wasn't very reassuring. Please note that the hospital does not employ her, she works for Valley Anesthesiology. 2) There is no assigned place for breastfeeding moms to pump. We were apart from our baby for over 5 hours, and I needed to pump twice during this time. I would think that a children's hospital would be more breastfeeding friendly and supportive, and that it has to be a pretty common need with mothers of babies. Each time the nurses didn't seem to know where to put me. The first time, I was allowed to pump in my son's pre-op room after they took him for surgery. The second time, I was given a different pre-op room, that had several missing blinds, so there were huge windows with gaps in the blinds, and the chair in the room faces these windows. It was not very private and quite awkward. I also had to supply my own pump and own cooler to keep the milk cold, because apparently the hospital only supplies a hospital grade pump and fridge once your child is admitted, surgery doesn't count. My friend's child had a surgery at Phoenix Children's, and they were so supportive of her- there was a designated space for mother's to pump while their child was in surgery, complete with a fridge, the pump and all parts were supplied during the whole stay including surgery (she was provided meals during the stay!). This isn't me asking for special treatment; I am feeding YOUR patient- the AAP recognizes that breastmilk is preferential over formula. If a baby is formula fed, or fed solid food, the hospital must provide during the stay. In our case, I am providing the food! I am not asking for a meal or anything fancy- but a comfortable and private space to pump on one of the hardest days of my life would have been nice. This complaint has already been made to Banner; and I hope they took it seriously and give the mother's who have babies getting surgery better experiences than I had. I hope I am never going through surgery with an infant again-- so this request is not for me. It's for all breastfeeding mommas.
