| - WARNING: Very long review - December 31st, 2007 experience
If you're going to celebrate your New Years Eve at Alize in Las Vegas, then this review is for you.
(Yes, it's the middle of August, but if you want to have dinner at high-end restaurant in LV on 31st, you should start planning early - restaurants get booked fast)
LOCATION: We chose this restaurant for 2008 not only because it had glowing reviews, but also because supposedly you get the best view of the New Year's fireworks from it. Yes, you do, but ONLY if you have a table facing the window overlooking the strip. Disappointment #1 We did not. Not only that, but our table was located right at the entrance, next to a wall + one side had a 2-seater bench instead of chairs. It was a velvet tufted bench, but still just a bench... too close for my comfort to another table... in a luxury restaurant... where they were asking $325 per person for the 2d sitting (prix-fixed menu) & we ended up paying $2000 w taxes & tips ($500 per person). Note: If you didn't know this before, almost all highly rated restaurants in Las Vegas have 2 sittings on New Years: 1st - usually from 6PM to 9PM, 2d - from 9PM to midnight (price & menu varies accordingly)
FOOD: All appetizers & salads were good... except for one order of pan seared foie gras, which came overcooked. That piece was also very thin comparing to another identical order we had at our table. Disappointment #2
Roasted 2lb Maine Lobster was cooked to perfection, BUT it was not deveined. Ouch!!! Disappointment # 3 My Sautéed Black Angus Filet Mignon was horrible: it was very dry and almost cold! I had only 1 bite. Huge disappointment #4
Desserts were not memorable.
SERVICE: Disappointment #5 Our waitress was taking care of too many tables, thus was not very attentive. I don't think it was her fault though, more Alize's managers. Also, we had difficult time catching a sommelier.
CONCLUSION: We don't have the amount of money Kobe Bryant has, also we're not famous, but I believe our credit card was as good as anybody else's. Apparently, not for Alize's management.
NB! If you decide to spend one of the major holidays at this restaurant because of its great view, please make sure you will be seated at the table facing the window.
You may ask why we didn't request to bring another appetizer, replace my filet mignon or divine the lobster. Well, we really didn't want to ruin our holiday mood by fighting for what we were supposed to get in the first place. Besides, the restaurant was understaffed, they had difficult time getting everything in time as it is; can you imagine how long it would take them to bring a replacement.
You may also wonder why we never contacted the restaurant afterwards to voice our disappointment. Well, in Latin it would be vox clamantis in deserto = the voice of one crying in the desert/wilderness. If they had cared just a tiny bit about their non-celebrity clients, they would have warned us beforehand that our table would be placed at the entrance of the restaurant with a bench instead of 2 chairs, letting us decide if we still wanted to keep our reservation.
Still, we had great time there. It was a memorable New Year with dear friends. The soreness about this whole Alize experience came to me later ;)
I would definitely give Alize a chance to redeem itself next time we're in Las Vegas, but I will not visit it on any major holiday.
P.S. Yes, Kobe Bryant was in Alize that night with his lovely wife. Of course, he was promptly seated at the prime location.
