| - We came here with my sister--in-law and her bf after her graduation, since she indicated this was one of the most popular restaurants in Madison. The 4 stars is for food, and because I agree this is a must-visit to get the classic Wisconsin experience, but the service was definitely 2 stars (or less). On weekdays at lunch, you order at the counter and then they bring your food out to you. But they don't let you pay when you order, so you have to wait in a long line to order and then in another long line to pay. They screwed up my sister-in-law's bf's order (they forgot the bacon on the burger but charged him for it) and so he asked if they could take the bacon off the bill - instead they brought out two sad-looking strips of bacon for him to eat on the side, which was not really what he wanted. Then when all went to pay for our meals, they thought we had left the booth and began clearing it, including taking my fiance's sweatshirt and putting it in the lost-and-found. When he realized he didn't have the sweatshirt, we asked about it and recovered it, but it just seems so weird to take it and put it in lost-and-found before people have left.
So why 4 stars? Well the food was really good and definitely a unique experience. I had the grilled cheese with a side of cheese curds (cheese with a side of cheese - when in WIsconsin, right?) The cheese curds were fantastic and the sandwich was pretty good as well. It came on really buttery Texas toast. My fiance really enjoyed his prime rib sandwich as well and it came with decent, but not great, fries. Portions were pretty hearty, although a bit pricey - most sandwiches were in the $9-$10 range, and adding cheese curds to them was $3. I doubt I would be here regularly if I lived in Madison, but I do think it's a cool place to stop as an out of town guest.
