  • I joined Pilates + Yoga over Memorial Day, 2014, buying a 3-month membership (approximately $300), followed by an unlimited one-year membership over Labor Day weekend ($1525). In early 2015, the Previous Owner (PO) and I discussed my becoming certified. I arranged to be trained. PO sold studio. New Owner (NO) promised to honor all arrangements I made with PO -- agreeing to put me on the schedule immediately after I became certified as I made it clear that I would never spend thousands of dollars on pilates training if it meant I would be pounding the pavement in search of illusive work at my age. The NO assured me saying that, "... she would put me on the schedule once I became certified." In June, the NO and I met for coffee to discuss my marketing the studio. I requested a tuition reduction of $875 -- the amount going for overhead expenses, to cover my time and expenses. She advised me that she needed to write up an agreement. I agreed to sign it. However, no such agreement was ever presented. For weeks the NO was aware through emails, texts, phone calls, and via receipt of my marketing plan, that I was marketing the studio. "Everyone" knew. Just as it was common knowledge that I was going on the schedule immediately upon my certification. When the NO had her grand opening, I attended, while most of her staff did not. I also made a point to support her when she taught her first mat class. No Instructors, other than pilates certification Instructor, were there to support her. A Groupon student inquired about pilates training, and I was told that I would have to wait yet another month and trained with this person as, training two was more profitable than training one. Then I was informed that the NO had two friends interested in mat pilates only. But, not available for the next three weeks. I had previously worked out a payment plan at a reduced tuition rate. Then, the NO raised the tuition fee and refused to honor my previous agreement. She also required payment in full. I reminded her that, I should have been trained by now, I felt this was not fair to me after waiting it out. That I was not only losing my $1000 discount, but also, gaining her $250 tuition increase -- making this an additional $1250 nut I should not have had to pay. This is when I learned that a non-refundable $250 deposit was also required. Upon receiving the NO's first installment ebill I noticed it did not reflect any reduction of the $875 I was under the impression she was deducting for my marketing services. This is when the NO suddenly countered my $875 overhead reduction by requiring I first sell $4000 in memberships. I reminded her that the $875 was strictly for all of the time and energy I had been exerting in order to getting warm bodies through the studio's front door. It was her job to sell them a membership. So, I immediately ceased all marketing of the studio and the teacher training program and, on good terms with her. I believe that the NO mislead me into training at the studio solely to gain my tuition money -- $3250, had our training been completed -- plus an additional $400 in books/videos. Aware of UNLV's pilates training program, she knew I chose to train at her studio because, it was where I would be working -- making her promises even more disingenuous. Scheduling conflicts never seemed to end. But, a total of $2626 in overhead money would have been paid so this was inexcusable! But, we were constantly moved from room to room, even though the NO and her Manager knew full well that our training sessions were scheduled for those same times! Because of all management's antics, we were unable to complete the reformer/apparatus portion of our training because the studio couldn't get its act together. Only I, and one other student, actually became pilates mat certified. After subbing the 5:30 class for the second time, on 12.14.15, the NO and I chatted. I requested she turn the 5:30 sculpt class back to the 5:30 mat class, as I really wanted to teach this class on a regular basis. She said she would consider it. On 12.30.15 I received Pilates + Yoga's January, 2016's, Newsletter email and read about the newest member of the studio's staff teaching the Monday, 5:30 mat class!!! I am an excellent mat pilates Instructor so, my abilities are not in question. Now it was finally clear that all the NO really cared about was my tuition money, not me. So, I can't help but wonder if, maybe, ageism may have had something to do with this. I experienced the worst training, and display of bad faith, the studio ever exhibited. This was, and is, 100% due to the NO and her Manager. The NO was a woman I once trusted and respected but, this trust and respect was never reciprocated. Pilates + Yoga was a way of life for me. It made me feel emotionally and physically happy. But, due to all the greed and deceit, this lifestyle choice is no longer an option for me. For shame on you Pilates + Yoga!!!
