| - I took the used bike I purchased off a friend to The Bike Joint to get it checked out to ensure its parts were functioning correctly and have it tuned up for safe riding. The bike seemed to be in good used condition other than a drag I worried about and made clear to the repair person. I paid the $55+ tune-up fee and came back a few days later to pick it up.
When I took it out of the shop, the drag was still there. The shopkeeper/repair person insisted it was due to a fender which leaned on it, and I would have to adjust it from time to time. Why he did not fix this issue when that's what I paid him to made no sense to me, but I thought it was 'just one of those things' with old bikes and accepted his review. After all, he is the expert.
On the way home, riding my 'freshly tuned up' bicycle on the streets of downtown Toronto, my brakes jammed; I ended up *walking it home*. Upon my own inspection, it didn't take long to see that the drag was caused by the bike's brakes being too tight rather than any fender issue. In all of 2 minutes I loosened the brake with some pliers (I am by no means a handy person) which reduced the drag and resumed normal riding-braking form.. In addition to that, I realized nothing had been done to my gears which were stuck - not only no fixing, but also no mention or recommendation given. It didn't appear as though my bike had been examined at all, given these were glaring and obvious issues that even a bike novice would recognize.
In summation, I don't recommend this place. The service I paid for had not been delivered, and they sent me off with an unsafe and still-in-disrepair vehicle . They obviously did not inspect my bike because if they did, not only would these issues - essential to operation, not minor or cosmetic - be recognized, but they would be addressed. Very disappointing to deal with. +1 star for being indirectly responsible to encouraging me to learn how to examine and fix things for myself.
