  • I have been here several times to play with pups but this was my first time volunteering for the facility. We started out with a tour which I recommend doing and I believe they tour twice daily. With the tour you get to see what each animal will experience upon arrival. When the animals arrive they are given a medical exam and then placed in the holding unit. They have a holding unit for dogs and a separate one for cats and kittens and they are held for three days in this location to give owners a chance to reclaim their lost ones. The three days also helps the animal adjust and eventually if not claimed be placed in the adoption units. Something interesting I learned was that this facility is an "All admission" place. Meaning they do not turn away any animal, and with this they have admitted everything form cats, dogs, desert tortoise, snakes, birds, chickens, bunnies, horses, and even a shark...yes a shark! They do work with other no kill organizations, as many as 70 as you can imaging the traffic here can be overwhelming at times. Adopting is not hard to do here. My job today was to walk any dog that had not already been walked and I immediately fell in love with a little 15 week old Yorkie Terrier named " Suzy Q" which ended up only wanting to be held and refused to be walked. Adorable! I was curious as to how they were named and learned that the ones who were dropped off by the owner came with a name and otherwise where named by the Animal Foundation staff. So if you do adopt there is a good chance you could still re-name your new family member. Adopting is fairly easy and pricing can range but will be capped at $250. The price can drop weekly or monthly. The longer the pet sits here, the lower the pricing becomes. You can also foster which is a great idea and normally involves kittens or puppies that may need extra care and even bottle feeding. This is a great alternative however being the animal lover that I am, I could easily see myself becoming a permanent foster parent instead which is why I think they offer this to begin with. The cats and kittens we saw today were absolutely beautiful and even saw a mama cat nursing about five kittens (if I counted correctly) and this room was pleasantly nice and quiet! There is a good mixture of breeds both mix and full blooded breeds, like today they had a German Shepard, English Bull Dog, a couple of Yorkie Terriers, and Labs, but what they don't have a shortage of are Chihuahua and Pit Bull Terriers. The staff here really works hard and has an admirable passion for what they do daily when it comes to caring for these animals. For instance they have staff making their rounds every 20 minutes 24-7 cleaning and tending to all the animal's needs and the place is kept fairly clean for holding as many animals as they do. Thank you Animal Foundation for all you do to ensure that all the animals that come through your facility get the right care and ultimately the chance to live a better quality of life.
