I was visiting on a trip from Buffalo, NY when my car experienced trouble and gave a PO420 check engine code. I took my car here and was quoted "around" $2600 to replace two catalytic converters and 4 oxygen sensors. After balking at the price, I was told that the catalytic converters were around $1000 each because of the special materials inside of them, and that the job would include 6.5 hours of labor. When I asked the hourly cost for labor, I was given the indirect answer of "it varies". When I pushed for the range, they told me it could be from $40-$115 an hour. I am not sure about here, but mechanics in NY are required to post their hourly rates. Already having a sour taste in my mouth, I still had to pay $60 for the "diagnosis".
After calling another shop in the area, I was immediately given a quote of $1468 total. This shop may do right by others, but I do not feel like I could trust their service after receiving such an exorbitant estimate.
