| - Great idea, stupid implementation. Sign up is easy enough, but beware the auto-reload. I was happily tapping on and off the UP Express for months and wondering why it kept reloading so much, so I checked my trip history and discovered that I had been charged for trips to the airport instead of Bloor to Union almost every time. Why? Because apparently you have to tap on and off the same colour of machine. Who knew?
They did credit me the almost $90 they had charged in error, but if I hadn't noticed that money would be a goner. Now I'm paranoid about tapping on and off, but since half the time the machines don't work (or worse, seem to work, but don't) I still get charged way too much because they assume I've ridden the whole line. Today I got stuck again: I had put $20 yesterday and today it was all gone, leaving me with a penny. Where did the money go? Well apparently to pay off all my previous imaginary trips to the airport.
The CSR was nice enough (they all are), and explained that you have to tap on and off every time (which I do), unless you ask them to put a default trip on your record, in which case you don't. But what happens if you do out of habit? God only knows. I give up -- no one seems able to keep track of all the tap on, off, reload, defaults, tricks, and machine errors. What's going to happen when you tap might as well be an act of God, because I sure can't tell anymore.
I never thought I'd be nostalgic for tokens, but I am. I think I'm going to shred my Presto card and just pay cash fares again, even if they are more expensive. Now to call the UPX customer service line again...
