| - You know, I've had mixed experiences at this restaurant, three extremely good and one...well, not so good. The first meal was beautifully paced, everything tasted excellent from a creamy mushroom soup to a crispy duck salad to a big fat slice of rare tuna on unimpeachable polenta. The second one featured just a few delicious bites between my then-fiance and myself late in the evening over some champagne to celebrate our engagement.
We also went to Harvest for our rehearsal dinner. It was a smash! Our server was unbelievable, the wine flowed, the courses were delicious, and everything was beautifully paced out. It wasn't even that catastrophic a bill, since this was during Restaurant Week. They packed in 14 of us, and I was grateful that they were able to accommodate us (we booked early).
We did go one other time and didn't have such a great experience, just pretty darned disgusting sweetbreads (I usually love them), a mediocre main dish and a lame dessert. Oh well. You can't win 'em all, but Harvest comes close. Fantastic place, and one of the only restaurants in Madison where you'll see a guy in a suit on a regular basis. Frequented by the politicos down on Capitol Square (it's right next to L'Etoile and owned by the same people), but not so much by the UW professorial types - you'll find them closer to campus at the swankier ethnic joints and, of course, at Sardine.
