  • After a friend chose La Brioche as a brunch spot, I mistakenly took a peek at some of the Yelp reviews. Yikes. I was a little terrified to go. From the reviews, I anticipated some old lady decor, overpriced food, bad service, and no cell phones. For the most part, I was pleasantly surprised. Call me Maude or Ethel or Dorothy June...but I kind of like the decor. It's different, but not over the top. I love the big comfy chairs, the pillows, the slightly crazy wallpaper. However, things like the open kitchen/bakery counter and the tile floor keep it from being too stuffy. It was fancy, yet casual...if there was such a thing! I only wish that on the cold day we went that they had double doors - it was pretty darn cold in the restaurant. Our server was young, friendly, and did a great job answering our questions and helping accommodate my request for some plain yogurt for my 16 month old. She wore a cute apron as part of her uniform and seemed to be enjoying her job, which is always important to me when I am "rating" service people. The menu was very detailed...maybe a little too detailed. In case you don't know...they serve organic eggs. And, in case you forget, they remind you on every single menu item. It's a little overkill. A simple "we use all organic eggs!" at the bottom of the menu would suffice. I was expecting to be royally annoyed by the whole no cell phone thing. I'm always that obnoxious person taking photos of their food. I still did...I was just a little sneaky about it. I guess I am the person they are trying to reign in! I did notice a few other sneaky folks with their phones out, but luckily nobody ordered us out of the restaurant or anything like that. I understand their desire to create a technology free zone even if its not really my thing. The details with the food were all excellent. My friend ordered tea, and it came in a gorgeous green tea pot. I ordered the Vanilla Challah French Toast with berries. It was was beautiful. The berries were fresh, and the first piece I ate was delicious. At this point, I would have given La Brioche a solid four star rating. However, my second piece of French Toast was completely undercooked. Like, it was soft and wet and mushy and icky and made me think to myself, "Self, should you really even be eating this? There could be some serious food poisoning in your future!!!" Luckily, I survived, but I cannot shake how bad that single piece of French toast was. My sad soggy toast kind of ruined the rest of the meal for me. I would really like to go back to La Brioche. The baked goods and pastries looked amazing and there were other items on the menu that I would like to try. Hopefully they will be better than my first meal. I am hoping to bump them up another star...but until then...it's a three. The number one goal of a restaurant is not to have interesting decor or good servers or to create a certain type of environment. It is to make GOOD food. Good, well-cooked food. They need to work on that.
