  • I love the feeling that the Calgary Farmer's Market elicits in me, but I everytime I visit I can't help but compare it to those in other cities. It's no match for Montreal's Jean Talon Market, that's for sure. I wish there were more local farmer's who could afford the high rents so we could get an even more diverse selection of fresh fruits and veggies to pick from and locally produced items. It has a great layout though. In the winter, the produce is sourced from further away, but are very open about telling you where something came from. In the summer, there are lots of fruits from the okanagan, and corn and potatoes and carrots grown locally. Because they are so so fresh, they seriously taste delicious. Most of the produce is pretty highly priced, which I believe is an unfortunate result of those rents. There are a ton of other things in the farmer's market though. The... "food court" has a ton of different stalls, with stuff from sushi and bubble tea to chinese to south american fare, and of course: Simple Simon Pies. The market is also home to Phil and Sebastian's and a ton of adorable little arts and craft stalls. It's only open from Friday - Sunday, and is really far away, so a visit means that I need to plan my day around it. In the summer, I prefer to stop off at the sellers along the sides of the road, or head out to one of the towns around Calgary to score some sweet fresh produce (and it only takes a little longer). It's a great idea with alright execution.
