  • Years and years ago, when I was in High School, I worked for the Belks Corporation as a salesperson in one of their stores. Many years have passed since then, but I have always been a regular customer. I found that out of all the "Big Box" stores, Belk always had a solid line of offerings, that wore well, and were good value for money. So when work not only took me to Charlotte, it took me to the Belk headquarters building ... I was kind of interested in seeing the place my paychecks had come from, so long ago. While the outside looks like a normal glass sided office building, the inside atrium and associated spaces are a bit breathtaking ... a cathedral to retail, but still, evocative of a cathedral. Light, airy, artwork, amenities, this is a flawlessly designed show piece. I also saw the Belk employees getting ready for their quarterly investors meeting, and was wowed by the technology and simple elegance of their preparations. While some folks may have individual issues with the company ... in any business enterprise, issues arise ... to me the Belk company showed nothing but class from the lowest level to the highest. It gave me a little kick, to know that I had once been a part of it all. Thanks for the visit. It was fun.
