| - Spoon is a place I would say is definitely worth visiting if you're in the Pittsburgh area. My girlfriend and I were up in Pittsburgh in early March for a concert at the Petersen, and after looking at a few different places, we decided on Spoon because we loved the menu and it was close enough to our venue.
Walking into Spoon there is definitely a modern feel to the restaurant. The decor was pretty contemporary (my girlfriend ate dinner sitting on the most turquoise booth/couch you have ever seen), there were weird pictures of spoons everywhere, and there was damn good 80's music playing overhead at the perfect volume.
We started off with some Rose champagne while we looked over the menu. Great pour on the champagne. We ordered the Octopus empanada and then selected our entrees. Before the empanada came out, bread service was brought out. DELICOUS bread. There was a sort of herbacious biscuit, some sourdough, and a sweet cornbread. Butter complimented them all very well. Love a good bread selection.
Unfortunately, I couldn't really get behind the empanada - which is a bummer because I love them. The octopus inside was a little fishy for my taste, and I'm not a huge fan of capers. On the flip side, my girlfriend loved it, so definitely a preference thing on the empanada.
Our entrees were brought out shortly after the first, and all was right with the world again. I ordered the lamb shank gnocchi with pecorino, rosemary, pine nuts, and pomegranate. I haven't ever had something like a mean gnocchi with pomegranate but I thought it was really well done! There weren't too many pomegranate seeds in there so it was a nice sweet bite when one snuck its way onto your fork.
We ended the meal with a glass of wine each, and once again they were not stingy with the pours. Service was good all meal long.
Although I wish I could have maybe tried a different first course, the overall meal was great. Definitely recommend stopping by here if you want a nice meal that won't break your bank!
