| - I'm going to leave the body of my previous review intact below, so readers can have context. As of now, I'm raising my rating of this Phoenix location to 5-stars (previously 4). Over the past couple months they've shown me they can make consistent, quality espresso drinks. I've also purchased dozens of pounds of beans from them (for home espresso) and have been quite pleased with their roasts. My primary complaint: Phoenix's baristas are sometimes flustered by large crowds and the drink quality can (infrequently) suffer.

PREVIOUS REVIEW: As with my other coffee reviews, I feel the need to first qualify myself as a reviewer: I am an espresso fanatic, perhaps even a connoisseur. I've had my fair share of espresso in Italy (over the course of 15 years), I've sampled drinks from countless coffee houses across the U.S. I have a professional-grade espresso machine in my home, and as a hobby am working toward personal mastery in creating espresso drinks (not there yet).
Someone at Phoenix has, within the past year or so, "gotten religion". Phoenix has always been a pretty good roaster, but their cafes around town have been seriously inconsistent and often deficient in espresso drink quality. This no longer seems to be the case, based on the new E. 9th Phoenix Cafe.
My advice: don't bother with anything except the "European Shorts" menu. Try the 8 oz. latte or macchiato. I sampled 10+ beverages before writing this review, to ensure that it was a 'real' review. Eight of the ten drinks were 'near-perfect'; great espresso shot, great milk, latte-art. Sadly, 1 latte and 1 macchiato was sub-par, further underscoring Phoenix's reputation (in my book) for inconsistency. That's why they don't get 5-stars.
This Phoenix location (and perhaps all locations?) has the potential to be the best coffee house in Cleveland, if they can produce perfect espresso drinks *every* time. For now, this and Dewey's on Shaker Square are my top choices for coffee in Cleveland. You're almost there guys--keep trying!
(FYI--the primary standards of comparison for this review are Intelligentsia in Chicago and Gimme! Coffee in New York.)
