| - Being an avid runner, my life might as well be over if I cannot run anymore. Okay, maybe not, but running has always been a way of relieving stress, clearing my mind, and being outdoors. I've run an ultra marathon in Antelope Canyon and have done nearly 100 trail races by now, but believe or not, a treadmill incident is what finally got me. I just landed "funny" with one of my steps and ignored it, pushing onward. This is where my knee pain started. I wasn't able to even drive my car because the clutch hurt my knee when I pushed down on it (granted it the Subaru does have a really stiff but sturdy clutch pedal).
I didn't know if I should see an orthopedist or try physical therapy first. Foothills Sports Medicine and Therapy offers free consults so I decided to let them help me navigate what I should do. They paired me up with Layne Cooper, one of their several physical therapists, whom I learned to trust and help me through rehabilitation of my left knee. After examination, she found that I had knee bursitis and by doing strengthening exercises, I would get more knee support and subsequently less bursitis.
For my situation, it took about going once a week for 2 months before she was ready to send me on my way. I started from limping around to going back to long hikes again. Since my rehab, I hiked 40+ miles in Zion National Park, Utah with my husband in September. Then, last month, he and I did 15-17 miles a day of hiking while in Havasupai in the the Grand Canyon. I'll admit, the added weight of backpacking did aggravate my knee again, so I need to be better about doing my exercises again. I'm one of "those people," those bad patients who once they start feeling better, they stop what they're supposed to be doing.
I noticed from going to physical therapy sessions at Foothills that they don't just rehabilitate. They also can help you focus and become better and more efficient at sports you already do. She had me work with Ramon, Jeff, and some other PT assistants (sorry I can't remember everyone's names) to monitor if I was doing my exercises properly and how to improve on them. My form was deeply analyzed, especially with Ramon and we went back to the basics (unlearning some of the bad habits from the past) with squatting, push ups, and weighted lifts. I'm very grateful to Foothills Therapy at the Surprise location for helping me get back to what I love most. If I ever have problems again, (which I probably will with my adventures), I know exactly who to turn to!
