| - I had not been a member of a gym for over 20 years and I needed to get in shape for a specific reason. It finally forced me to get out and exercise. I researched various trainers and gyms in the Phoenix area. I wasn't too interested in joining L.A. Fitness even though it was close because of their nasty sales techniques. After I realized that the private trainers were too expensive, I had to narrow it down to the other places that were relatively close to my home.
The Planet Fitness by me is in a sketchy area. The reviews reflected that. I ended up emailing Jedediah at this YouFit and he was very friendly so I stopped in. I admit, when I walked in, I had my guard up! I was ready for the hard sell. Jedediah wasn't there but another employee gave me the basic tour and told me about the plans (all 2 of them). They had a special going on where they waive the initiation fee. I told him I didn't want to sign up right then and asked when the special ended. He didn't pressure me at all. He was normal. Normal interaction. I was really impressed.
Long story short, I joined about a month ago. I wanted to get some personal training because I had NO idea what I was doing. The personal training is expensive. And - that slimy contracting agreement style that gyms have did appear here. The whole deal of having to cancel one month in advance or it automatically renews. At hundreds of dollars a month, you could make an expensive mistake. It's clearly designed to take advantage of the situation. I don't see any reason why they couldn't let you cancel with one week's notice. It's not like they schedule out a month at a time. This kind of tarnished the experience a bit.
So - it's not completely devoid of typical gym practices but here's the bottom line...
It's NEVER busy during the mid-morning to late afternoon. The employees are really friendly. A lot of them remember you by name. This might have to do with the fact I always come in at low traffic times. My trainer is perfect and has a really good attitude about the fact that I can barely lift anything. The treadmills work great for me - there are always a couple out of service but there are about 15 of them. I have only done a little actual weight lifting with the trainer so far but I don't see any problems with the machines. There are plenty of machines I haven't gotten to yet. Everything is clean. Lots of parking.
I nailed it on this pick. All in all, I am very pleased with how this worked out. I am very comfortable, not intimidated. It really seems like a good mix of "regular people" and more serious weightlifter types. Ok, I don't think I could dive into that free weight area just yet. That might be intimidating given my complete lack of muscle. I'll get there one day!
Things that may matter to you that don't to me... Treadmills and ellipticals have TVs but only a handful of channels. Very basic locker room (maybe 25 lockers, 3 showers, 2-3 sinks). Overall, it's not a big place. No classes. Not open 24 hours or even really late. I bet their other locations have more to offer but this location is just fine with me. I'm told it gets busy during peak times.
