  • Pros: -Open late (midnight) and they have an interior garage, which is super handy in winter and nice that we don't have to use metered parking out front. -Their hybrid bagel/croissant roll that they use to make sandwiches is easy to eat and tasty if you get it fresh. Cons: -Service is pretty much non-existent. If you are bringing bottles to return, good luck if the machine is broken and you need help. In the past, we've been turned away with our bottles and told to bring them back another day. Yes, of course I want to keep lugging sticky bottles back and forth from my trunk! Their cashier are also of the non-cheerful "I hate life" variety. -EXPIRED FOOD!! I cannot count how many times I've seen canned or bottled food items on liquidation, and they are past their expiration date. I'm not talking about one or two days expired; I've often seen items a whole MONTH past their date! Technically, they shouldn't even be selling anything at ANY price when it's expired. -Ready-to-eat/ takeout meals that they make in-house that have odd "good by" dates. Most of the time, if you go through their takeout section, you'll see meals that are five or six days old and have expiration dates on them indicated they are good for 8 days from the time they have been prepared. These are not frozen meals, only refrigerated, and they have meat or seafood products in almost every one of them. I don't know how the rest of Metro's clientele feels, but when I see Shepherd's pie that has ground beef, or their couscous Royale that has a trio of meats (chicken, sausage and beef), and they are already six days old, I'm thinking "really???". Of course, I don't buy such items when I see the dates, but it ticks me off that they are still selling them. It's one thing for me to make a personal decision to keep homemade food in my fridge for X days and chance eating it, but I would think a supermarket should err on the side of caution and provide fresher meals to avoid any possible food-borne illnesses. -And now, the kicker! This past Friday, we purchased some raw salmon from their fish counter to prepare at home. It was one of those roulade-type items, where they wrap a piece of salmon around a centre of veggies- in this case, spinach and red peppers. Anyway, we cooked it at home as usual, and no, for anyone doubting our capabilities, we did not undercook it and yes, we make salmon on a very frequent basis and haven't ever had issues before this. Anyway, fast forward six hours later to 2am on Saturday, and I am awakened by shivers and extreme stomach cramps. I'll save the details, but let's just say, there was a lot of upchucking of salmon. To further add insult, my husband noticed that they added MSG to the fish and veg! Why on earth are they adding an ingredient like that (which can cause very bad allergic-type reactions in many people) to raw fish??? Unbelievable. So to sum up, go there for basic shelf-stable items if you must (and buy on sale, since their regular prices are a joke), but be wary of their perishable items, since they don't seem to take care in providing safe and fresh items.
