  • What a great concept for a store, and I'm really fortunate to have this place in my neighborhood. In terms of service, owner friendliness and knowledge, variety of gear and prices on *many* (not all) of the items, this place is worthy of five stars. I don't know if any consignment shop can very really achieve a five star rating in my book because it is practically impossible to be a "one stop shop" (like REI, Dicks, Sports Authority) when the primary source of the inventory is thrift/consignment customers. That said, Salvation Outdoor comes as close to having a "full" selection as any 2nd-time-around store Ive ever seen! Consider my example shopping list from my two most recent trips: 1. Kayak Paddle...didn't have one at the time. 2. Safari type vest....YES, had many, including one I picked up bearing a great national brand name (REI lol), unreal price! This item alone made the trip worthwhile! 3. Tactical Vest, Cartridge Belt, Cartridge belt pouches and military accessories: YES, had all of that in spades, and very good to outstanding pricing. 4. Zip Off Pants: YES, had it in my size, Columbia brand, incredible price! 5. Jetboil: Didnt have one (although I wouldn't hold that against them....stores such as these never do have them) 6. Adult PFDs: Didnt really have much in this department. Had a fair selection of childrens PFDs at good to very good pricing. Decent selection of inflatable PFDs as well. 7. 10 degree sleeping bag: YES, although they didnt have one in the style or weight I happened to be looking for. Bag prices seemed average to good. 8. Camelback: YES, they had plenty of them, prices average, a few seemed to be priced near full retail, even though clearly used. I didnt buy one. So, on my 8 item shopping list, they had about 6 of the items, and I ended up buying 4 of them. The great thing is, of the four things I bought, I got a really, really good deal on them, and the owner is a great guy and quite pleasant to deal with. On those same trips, my wife didn't really have a shopping list, but she nonetheless browsed around and found 3-4 irresistible deals. and maybe that is where Salvation is truly best in the biz.....as a place to browse to find those outdoor gear treasures you never knew you wanted or needed. I accordingly highly recommend Salvation Outdoor to ANYONE into outdoors activities. Go there BEFORE you go to the Big Boxes, because while Salvation may not have everything you are looking for, it will check a few items off your Big Box shopping list, and it will save you some big $$$ along the way. Other Great things about this place: - Super accessible, right off the 51. - Parking a breeze...you can pretty much park 25 feet from the door on any given day. - No sales pressure upselling from staff/owner, just the occasional helpful check-in to see if you need help finding anything. - As congested as the store is (its a small space), the organization of the gear makes sense and it tends to be easy to find things. - Gear seems quite serviceable, well checked for quality/damage. - Really, really nice selection of packs and frames. - Im not a bike enthusiast, but if I was, this place would be a true go-to as they really seem to cater to cyclists. SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES!
