My mother was at senior horizons many years back and it was a nightmare. We were told it was a lovely facility and they would get my moms meds in order to help control her " behaviors". I have since learned that these "behaviors" we're a normal part of the dementia process. The psychiatrist who worked with my mom referred to her as "the patient" in a family meeting that my mother attended with us. He totally disregarded the fact that she was in the room! We asked him to address her not refer to her as though she were a material object, he didn't comply. My mother said "excuse me Dr. But you seem to forget that I'm a human being." He still didn't comply. I don't think my mom should have ever gone there. I think it was wrong for them to admit her. She was way too high functioning and felt as though we locked her up. It was a terrible scary experience and I regret allowing the health care professionals to convince me that this would be a good experience. Unless your loved one is having severe issues and won't be traumatized by being locked in a psychiatric unit do not consider this!!! I'm not sure what alternatives are out there as our overall experience with my moms end of life care was not a good one, but I hope this review can help save other families from going through some of the heartache our family experienced.
