This place opened a couple of years ago. It is close to my house, but early reviews were not promising. My wife and I have been reluctant to try, but last night, decided to go for it. We arrived about 4pm and wanted to take advantage of happy hour. Drafts were a buck off and a few rolls and appetizers, were discounted. The place was empty and I had to wipe off crumbs from my chair before I sat down. We noticed many of the chairs were filthy. Anyway, we found a few things we could agree on and ordered. We started with an assortment of tempura battered shrimp, veg and calamari. Looked pretty and we dove in.
We both took a piece of calamari from the pile. My wife took a bite first and waited for me. She thought something wasn't right, but wanted to see if I had same reaction. I dove into that piece of calamari. Oh dear God, what the hell. Major taste and smell of ammonia. I spit out and called over the waitress. I told her what we were experiencing. She was nice and offered to get us something else. We told her that were were not comfortable eating sushi now that we know the cooked food is not good. The manager came over to us and smelled the calamari on my plate. She was appalled at what she smelled. It was ammonia folks. Not sure if they spilled cleaning solution on the food or if this was just bad calamari?? Needless to say, we walked out. We will not be going back. I don't know how the chef couldn't smell this rancid crap before he battered and fried. Maybe he just doesn't care about killing someone? Nice job Otaku---you win the "Suck" award!
