| - One if not the worst medical provider experience I have ever had. I had gone to another location and had a PA do the biopsy and that was great, had a shot that hurt like heck for 30 seconds then she sliced a small mole right off for the biopsy. Then I had to get a MOHS and I guess she can't do those because they referred me out to a full MD at the Tenaya location, Dr. Lucius Blanchard. I arrived and the nurse called me in and I noticed she didn't shake hands, most do, she just said who she was, turned around, walked in, I followed. When we were in the room she said so you're here for a biopsy. I said no, I'm here for that procedure whose name I can't remember but they slice off some skin, off to the microscope, and keep slicing until they get a clean slice. She was confused and finally figured out what I was there for. Off to get the doctor. He came in and when I'm about to get shots it calms me down to make jokes about it, and I've found nurses, assistants, and doctors always joke right back. He comes in and says who he is and I noticed he didn't shake hands either. I don't really keep track of who shakes hands and who doesn't but the fact that I noticed it leads me to believe every other practitioner I've ever met shakes hands. And are much more enthusiastic in their greetings. So I joke to him about the two minutes of pain for the anesthetic (more like 20-30 seconds) and he looks down at the chart, looks up, says yes you're getting anesthetic, and walks off. O....K.... I guess you're not the jokey kind. Then the nurse goes to apply the anesthetic and I joke to her that I need an anesthetic for the anesthetic and she doesn't respond.... O..... K.... I guess no one here has a sense of humor. Which sucks for me because that kind of banter relaxes me. I mean I'm still going to hold still and if it hurts it hurts, but it makes it a lot easier on me to joke about it beforehand.
So she does the first shot, hurts like heck, ok done. Then she does another shot and I'm like huh? I thought it was one and she says after another 20-30 seconds of pain ok I'm done and I think whew ok now I got that over. Then she starts a THIRD shot and I'm thinking ok that's over and I said I thought you said it was done and she said the second shot. And I have the presence of mind to ask how many shots and she says three. By the way, these shots are just in succession without much input from her, shot, turn around, shot, turn around, shot, without any advance warning. She said I shouldn't be feeling the third shot and I told her, oh I feel it (mind you I had a biopsy... if I don't feel it, I'm not going to say I feel it, I don't want to extend the visit longer that it needs to be).
Then she comes to my face with a SCALPEL and I almost jump out of my chair and she said oh I'm just going to poke your face to see if you feel it. I think if you're going to come to my face with a scalpel you should tell me FIRST. Oh, hey, I want to see if it's numb so I'm going to poke you with the dull side of this scalpel, nothing to worry about, ok? Ok. But don't just come at me with a scalpel especially after just confirming the anesthetic is not working. By now I'm totally rattled and about to just get out of the gurney and walk out.
I told her I don't get it, I had a biopsy and it was 30 seconds and done, numb. She said oh we ran out of that anesthetic. Turns out they use epi and lido and they ran out of epi but lido works for everyone. Well, it sure wasn't working for me. Then she did a FOURTH shot and I felt it and I told her can we give it like five minutes? Thinking give it some time to work before you keep injecting stuff into my face. She comes back and does the scalpel again and still not numb so she says let's try something else and does 2-3 more shots, I can't even remember now, but I'm not exaggerating. Pokes me with something else, still not numb, and I decide to just come back next month when they have more epi since that worked for me. I ask her so what's the two you tried today? Lido. Ok and the other one? Just lido. I thought you said let's try something else? No, just lido.
I get up from the examining table and almost stumble to the floor. Is this supposed to make me dizzy? Oh yeah, that's normal. I think to myself you think you should have told me that before I stood up? Oh hey you may be dizzy get up slowly and carefully or something to that effect which I've been told in the past. I'm grabbing onto walls because my balance is gone and she said just wait a couple of minutes in the lobby before going home. I can drive? I ask incredulously. She said oh yeah sure just give it a couple of minutes. I ended up waiting 25 minutes and doing a test drive in the parking lot, almost had husband uber over to get me and the car, before I feel ok to drive home.
Picked up all my records and I'll be going somewhere else for the MOHS.
