While Big Al's has a fair selection of foraging toys and food for birds, the way they keep the birds they're selling is disgusting and ignorant. I don't know if this is lack of staff to take care of customers plus animals, but it's really sad. Seriously: BIG rant ahead by a bird nerd. I can't vouch for their fish supplies since I don't keep fish. I really, really hope the fish aren't kept in the same condition as the birds I've seen.
Whose idea was it to keep a pair of lovebirds directly by the automatic door when the temperature is 5 degrees outside?
Every bird I saw there was being fed a mostly seed diet-- a huge no in aviculture. I really hope that I just missed when they were putting out fresh veggies for them.
Many of their finches were puffed up and inactive- a sign possible sign of illness. While the cages did have toys in them for the birds, the toys themselves needed cleaning very badly.
There was also a bored-looking budgie caged off on its own where the cages are displayed. Birds need to be with other birds, and also not hung like some ornament in the middle of a room. I've also seen them selling round bird cages there, which are psychologically damaging for companion birds.
The first time I went in there and asked for assistance, the guy had to fetch one of the women because he didn't even know what a cockatiel was. How can you work at a pet supply store and not know what a cockatiel is?
They also had a pen of rabbits on display that you could smell across the store. It needed cleaning badly.
