| - Calgary Military Museums compound is one of the finest I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot.
Displays are perfectly organized, sound and light are expertly used to create an impressive experience. You don't just walk, you live through the most devastating conflicts in our history, you feel them. Just look in the cracked mirror of the trench periscope, or stay next to that blockpost, and in a moment you will realize yourself as literally being present!
It is totally difficult to talk about war without hurting yourself over the rough edges of politics - yet creators of CMM were smart enough to describe all needed without digging in the dirt. Yes that means a definitive accent on the war machinery and human factor, and there is nothing wrong with it.
Collections are excellent! Not as abundant as those of Russian, German or Italian military museums, for example, but in a perfect shape and neatly blended in the dynamic displays - or open and accessible, without damaging the artifacts. Very professional, very efficient.
A whole day would be barely enough to make a high-level overview of the CMM collection, so I suggest you to plan the follow-up trips, accompanied by the necessary reading to really appreciate the quality of the museum work.
Congratulations Calgary, you really have one of the very best there!
