  • After having been to the PDC Cabane à Sucre twice in the last 5 years, I've been meaning to eat at the actual PDC restaurant in Montreal for a while now (last 5 years, to be precise). But it took this long... and unfortunately, my experience fell way short of expectations. My partner had been in with a different set of people previously, and he loved it (he had the pork chop). He excitedly told me afterward that he had found this amazing restaurant he just had to take me to, only to realize that it was the exact same restaurant he'd been rejecting every time I brought it up in the last 3 years. To remedy his faux pas, we made a date to go there for a special occasion last week. Our reservation was for 5:30PM, and despite being early, we were seated promptly. Service was ok, although we may have irritated our server from asking too many questions (we were concerned about portions, because we weren't super hungry when we arrived...). The menu had a lot of items in it, but surprisingly not a lot of cochon (unless you wanted the stuffed PDC, which we didn't). My partner was pretty disappointed that the pork chop (or some variation) was not on the menu. In the end, we got the foie gras poutine to start and one of the specials for our main: halibut for two. Yes, I know - why halibut in a restaurant famed for pig & foie? Well to be honest, they made a mean fish when we went to their multi-course sugar shack last year... so we were really hoping for a repeat of that perfectly cooked dish! I also had the maple gin and tonic to drink, which is just as tasty as I remember (from the sugar shack). The poutine was pretty good - the foie gras adds a richness to an otherwise ordinary dish. The disappointment lay solely on the halibut. The lentil stew with leek and mushroom was delicious enough; but the halibut was way too salty! I have a pretty high tolerance for salt, so it was an unpleasant surprise to admit that the fish was salty to the point of inedible. I didn't want to make a big deal about it, so we paid before I made the comment to the server. Which of course was just met with a sorry, you should have said something sooner (and maybe we could have replaced your food). Not sure if that was good enough, but whatever. For a restaurant that charges a premium for their dishes, I expected a lot more. In the end, our business was already lost.. I just hoped that my comment may have prevented an unpleasant experience for other guests that made the wrong order. We likely won't be going back anytime soon... if at all.
