| - If you're an aquarium enthusiast (fresh and/or saltwater), then Greendale's is your go-to spot. I've been going here since I was 13 years old, and twenty two years later you'll still find me there.
Its off-the-beaten-path location and small nondescript building would likely make you pass it by without giving it a second thought. It doesn't exactly scream ''come here for quality aquarium fish!'' You won't find an advertisement for them anywhere, except for the occasional business card placed on a bulletin board or taped to the register at another local business, yet they've been around for over 70 years. How's that? Good old fashioned word of mouth!
Most any weekend you'll find quite a few loyal customers scoping out the tanks, waiting to lay claim to their newest aquarium additions. It's a popular place--ask anyone that's gone for any length of time & they'll know just what I'm talking about! And it's no wonder.....
+ While it's a small shop, they have a surprising selection of both freshwater and saltwater fish, enormous fish to teensy ones, and everything in between.
+ Quality & reliability of their fish has ALWAYS been top-notch. While they don't offer a ''big-box-pet store-style'' guarantee on their fish, you can be assured they've taken great care to pick out & offer the best fish available. This is one of the reasons for their customer loyalty.
+ Very friendly, knowledgeable, and HONEST staff. The owners don't hire just anyone. While they may not be marine biologists, they still know their stuff. And if you happen to inquire about something they're unfamiliar with, they FIND OUT for you. People rarely do that anymore.
+ If you're looking for a specific species/breed of fish, they can usually order it for you from their supplier(s), or keep an eye out for it during their weekly trips to the market.
+ ''Livestock'' pricing is very reasonable. MUUUUCH more so than Fintastic in Charlotte. They run about the same as 'big-box' stores on things like water conditioners/chemicals, and decorations & such.
+ And speaking of conditioners/chemicals, they carry a MUCH better variety than those big-box stores.
+ Usually have a nice selection of 'odd' aquarium sizes and shapes (especially acrylic tanks), as well as canopies & stands to match.
+ Fairly decent selection of outdoor pond supplies. I've always passed that by, so can't really say anything about that.
I've noticed over the years that they focus primarily on livestock now, and not so much on aquarium décor (plants, faux wood, rock; things like that). From time to time they'll bring in several new items, but you have to catch'em on the right day; a hit-or-miss kinda thing.
Looking to set up a ''beginner'' aquarium for your child (or yourself!) & want to make sure you do it correctly & receive the right information? Greendale's should be tops on your list. They'll steer you in the right direction without trying to over-sell you a bunch'a ''stuff'' you really don't need.
If you don't live close by, you may not visit THAT often, but it IS worth the drive. Great selection. Excellent quality fishies. Knowledgeable, friendly, non-pushy, honest staff. They're even open on Sunday. What more could you want? Oh, and bring the kiddies--they'll love it!
PS--they're closed Monday & Tuesday, but are open Sat & Sun.
Here's how to get there:
I-85 N to exit 63 & right onto Lane St.
Follow till it ends @ Old Salisbury-Concord Rd.
Left onto Old Salisbury-Concord. Go APPRX mile.
Left onto Goldfish Rd (how appropriate, right?!).
Greendale's is located in a small, pale green building ABOUT 2 miles ahead on the right, just past a sharp curve in the road.
